SUCCESSFUL STORY. AZIZA IDDY

AZIZA IDD.

"I am a mother of one beautiful child, Farida, and i am so much happy mom to my child. As a street child I never thought I would reach this far now i am called MAMA. It is an honor to be a parent, and it is a great honor and talent to be a great parent to your children".

"I did not had a chance to have great parents care, but today I stand to tell all the parents to take responsibilities as parents to stop more street children in the World"

Aziza was born in Mererani Arusha. She was the first born and had two little brothers. They stayed together with both parents. At the age of seven years, when one of the brothers was only a few months old, Aziza’s mother and her grandmother had big fight about who should remain with the children. The mother decided to take the children to the main road of the area where car pass speedy and left them in the middle of the road and dissapear, abandoning them.
The grandmother, feeling responsible, took the children to her home, though she was already old. At her grandmother’s place Aziza lived a simple life as the grandmother suffered by feeding them. Three years later, when Aziza was 10 years old, the grandmother died and the children were taken to the father’s place. At the beginning, life was good, as Aziza and one of her brother, who also lived there, was able to go to school. Life changed, when Aziza’s uncle, the brother of her father, who also lived at the father’s place, started to drink a lot of alcohol. Consequently, he wasn’t able to take responsibilities of Aziza and her brother. Aziza started stealing from the school to manage buying food for her brother and herself, after some time, her behavior became chronic. One day, being at standard six at school and having stolen again, she was beaten by her teacher in front of all the students. At this moment, she decided to run away to the streets. Living on the streets she was a girl smoking marijuana, weeds, cocaine, sniffing gums, drinking konyagi and gongo (traditional strong unsafe illegal spirit). She was fighting a lot and met different men for sexual business. At 2013, when Aziza was 13 years old, she met Makini Organization. Now, she is an artist and professional dancer who managed to travel to different places representing and showcasing her talent through dance. She has been to Kenya, Uganda and Italy and is in contact to both her parents. Aziza is also a girl convinced and inspired
Mariam Joseph Peter to join Makini and stop the life on the streets.

With this journey she came across, Aziza is also a mother who love and care about her daughter Farida.

Makini’s future expectation is to see all children having their rights to protection, provision and participation fully met and are empowered and respected as valuable members of their communities.

SUCCESSFUL STORIES: Joseph John Kumeza, From being a street child to a Director and founder of Shine dance company.

He lived on the street since he was a little child with the age of 5. He remember living with his father alone who left him to a friend when Joseph was 4 years old and promised to come back after few weeks as he is going to find money for Joseph better life in the City. A friend with Joseph waited for more than a year without a trace of the father nor communication. One day a friend took Joseph to town since they were living in the village and left him at a bus stand with a message that his father is coming shortly to take him. Joseph waited for the whole day there was no sign of father nor fathers friend. He did not know how he can go back to the village including him not having many information's about where to go. He found himself living on the streets and start begging for food and help if necessary but no one was interested to help him. He started living the life street at the area for the year when he decided to find transport to go to the City of Dar es salaam to look for his father. He did not manage to get enough money for transportation and no driver/conductor/person wanted to help him travel. He decided to hid in the car chases for his trip.
He reached in Dar es salaam coughing a lot with dust every where in his body. It was a big surprise for him because he couldn't know where to start find his father, many people, big city and he only know one name of his father. He loose hope and start again street life for seven years until he met Makini organization on the outreach street visit. It did not succeed for makini on tracing Joseph Family, so Joseph with other few Kids were raised under Makini watch and support who later on were supported with a group renting. The journey of Joseph made us as an NGO so much proud because despite his slow learning skills, he was so enthusiastic to learn more and more and practice until he understand it well. His good behavior surprised so many people that he once lived on the street.
We are so much proud to have successful children like Joseph. And we pray for him to have more and more development.

SUCCESSFUL STORIES

MARIAM JOSEPH PETER
(A Happy girl on stage of fashion than on stage of street)

Mariam Joseph lost both her parents when she was little. She found herself in a fight between her parent’s sides on which she should live with. From both sides she received constant physical abuse and none of her relatives gave her the chance to express herself.
Mariam’s dream as a child was to one day become Miss Tanzania or model and work in the fashion industry, she was inspired by the beautiful pictures of the girls on lotion bottles, soap and magazines. However, she was being constantly told by her relatives that she is ugly and too black that she will never do anything concerning beauty and fashion, she slowly gave up the hope that her dream would ever become true.
One day, the abuse became too much for Mariam.  She decided she could not take it anymore and she escaped home when she was 7 years old.
After her escape Mariam did not know what to do on the streets because it was more violent and dangerously even though she was free in making her own decisions. To be safe, Mariam asked a woman to help her by taking her as her house girl for domestic work, the woman took Mariam home, after her first month Mariam did not get her payment and she was bitten and sometimes prohibited to take food, She decided to steal money from a woman to take a bus to Mwanza. Her life became unsettled for long time. She took a bus to Dar es salaam where she found most cruel gangs on the streets. Mariam joined the girls gang group on the street, the group which could do any thing for survival; stealing, beating robbing, sexual business,

In August 2013, Makini was having one of its outreach programs in one of the areas in Dar es salaam.  During this outreach program, Nyakwesi Mujaya met Mariam at Karikoo, one of the areas of Dar es Salaam where street kids normally go. Mariam had then been living on the streets off and on for 5 years, making her livelihood through commercial sex and other gang activities.
Nyakwesi tried to convince Mariam to attend rehabilitation activities in Makini, to regain her confidence, self esteem and make her reach the dreams she was cut with when she was young.  But like many girls in her situation, she did not want to leave her street gang group. The first times she did not even want to talk.
To convince Mariam, Nyakwesi had to introduced her to Aziza, another girl who had been living on the streets, but who got support and help from Makini, and who is now a successful dancer. Nyakwesi saw a hidden beauty of Mariam and told her that she is really beautiful and that she could have a great career in fashion.
Slowly, Mariam started to listen and about 2 weeks after meeting her she first came to the Makini dropping centre, where we do workshops and training's for street children. Soon she started to come to the center everyday for therapy sessions and life skills training's. As Mariam’s dream was to work in fashion, we also started training her with fashion and modelling skills.
After one year and half after Mariam started coming to Makini, she managed to pass into the biggest East Africa Swahili fashion audition we exposed her into and worked with many designers.
Today, Mariam is living in a group renting with a very determine passion to pursue in fashion internationally as she also start visiting and meeting vulnerable girls whom she is inspiring with her invented fashion style. As Aziza was a proof for Mariam that her life could change, she is now also a proof for many other girls that they can change their lives and to start living on their dreams.
It has been amazing for Makini organization to follow Mariam’s journey to where she is now. She has become who she dreamed of being, a successful and highly respected role model for young girls.
Mariam is just one of the Thousands kids we are supporting at Makini. Makini future expectation is to see all children have their rights to protection, provision and participation fully met, and is empowered and respected as valuable members of their communities.
